HS code for coffee (0901) and the US duty on coffee from Vietnam in 2026

Estimate, not legal advice: verify with a licensed customs broker. Rates and measures on this page were last checked on 2026-10-10.

Coffee is classified under HS heading 0901. For coffee from Vietnam, the US base (general) duty rate is Free on green, decaffeinated and roasted coffee and on coffee husks and skins, and 1.5¢/kg on coffee substitutes containing coffee. The 12.5% Section 301 duty that the United States has charged on most Vietnamese goods since 24 July 2026 does not apply to these coffee lines: U.S. note 52(b) to chapter 99 exempts them. This page shows which code to use, each US duty layer and its status today, and where to check your exact line.

Which HS code is coffee?

The first six digits are the same in every country. The United States adds four more digits (the HTSUS 10-digit statistical line); Vietnam uses eight.

HS subheadingProductUS 10-digit lines split by
0901.11Coffee, not roasted, not decaffeinated (green coffee)Arabica, Robusta, other; certified organic or not
0901.12Coffee, not roasted, decaffeinatedArabica, Robusta, other; certified organic or not
0901.21Coffee, roasted, not decaffeinatedArabica, Robusta, other; certified organic or not
0901.22Coffee, roasted, decaffeinatedretail containers of 2 kg or less, or other; bean type; certified organic or not
0901.90Coffee husks and skins (0901.90.10); coffee substitutes containing coffee (0901.90.20)one line each

Instant coffee is not in 0901. Extracts, essences and concentrates of coffee are classified in heading 2101, so check that heading if you ship soluble coffee.

Within each subheading the US 10-digit lines (for example 0901.11.00.15 for certified organic Arabica green coffee) carry the same duty. They matter for statistics and for the entry, not for the rate.

Look up your line: coffee 0901 from Vietnam to the US, or straight to green coffee 0901.11.

The US duty on coffee from Vietnam, layer by layer

US base import duty for coffee from Vietnam: Free (0901.90.20: 1.5¢/kg). Check the additional measures below. There is no US free trade agreement with Vietnam, so the general (column 1) rate is the base rate.

Antidumping and countervailing duties are set per product and per producer and are not covered here: ask your broker to check for an order on your product. These are duties only. This page does not cover fees, US federal agency requirements or state taxes, and it does not add the layers into a total: the rate on your entry depends on the exact line, the country of origin and the date of entry.

Why coffee is exempt from the 12.5% Section 301 duty

On 28 July 2026 the US Trade Representative published its notice of actions in the Section 301 forced-labor investigations (91 FR 47318). For goods of Vietnam, heading 9903.05.84 adds 12.5% to the duty of the goods' own subheading, for goods entered on or after 12:01 a.m. ET on 24 July 2026. The notice lists products that the duties do not cover: coffee is in Annex II, Part A, "Goods of Any Investigated Economy" (91 FR 47401). In the tariff schedule this list is U.S. note 52(b) to subchapter III of chapter 99, and it names coffee subheadings 0901.11.00, 0901.12.00, 0901.21.00, 0901.22.00, 0901.90.10 and 0901.90.20. Its wording: "As provided in heading 9903.05.86, the duties imposed by headings 9903.05.20-9903.05.84 shall not apply" to the listed articles. CBP's guidance (CSMS 69326983) lists heading 9903.05.86 among the general exemptions for all economies.

Ask your customs broker to confirm the chapter 99 heading they report on the entry.

What to watch

  • The general rate can change with each HTSUS revision. Check the line on the day of entry.
  • The Section 301 exemption list can be modified by the US Trade Representative. If coffee leaves U.S. note 52(b), heading 9903.05.84 (+12.5%) would apply to Vietnamese coffee.
  • Coffee bound for the EU has its own rules. From 30 December 2026 the EU Deforestation Regulation applies to coffee: see our EUDR guide for Vietnamese exporters.
  • IEEPA duties paid on earlier entries. CBP refunds eligible IEEPA duties through its CAPE process: see our IEEPA refund guide. Whether a given entry qualifies is for your broker to confirm.

Questions

Is there a US tariff on coffee from Vietnam in 2026? The base (general) rate is Free for green, decaffeinated and roasted coffee and for husks and skins, and 1.5¢/kg for coffee substitutes containing coffee. The 12.5% Section 301 duty on Vietnamese goods does not apply to coffee because U.S. note 52(b) exempts it. The IEEPA duties and the Section 122 surcharge have ended.

What is the HS code for green coffee beans? 0901.11 (not roasted, not decaffeinated). In the US the line is 0901.11.00, split into 10-digit lines by bean type (Arabica, Robusta, other) and by certified organic or not.

What is the HS code for roasted coffee? 0901.21 if not decaffeinated, 0901.22 if decaffeinated.

Is instant coffee classified under 0901? No. Extracts, essences and concentrates of coffee are in heading 2101.

Does certified organic coffee pay a different duty? No. Certified organic coffee has its own US 10-digit statistical line, but the duty is the same as the other lines of its subheading.

Do I need a certificate of origin to get the Free rate? The Free rate is the general rate, not a preference, so it does not depend on a free trade agreement. The country of origin still decides which chapter 99 measures can apply, so it must be declared correctly. Ask your broker which documents your entry needs.
